Then I asked him what he’d actually do with his time.

He talked about his kids. About travel. About a project he’d shelved years ago that still kept him up at night.

Then I asked him to describe the business he was building… and the two pictures had almost nothing in common.

That gap is something I keep seeing in these conversations.

The life a founder describes when money is off the table, and the business they’re pouring their hours into, sit on entirely different foundations.

In my experience, that disconnect isn’t carelessness. It’s history.

Why Survival Is Behind Most Reasons for Starting a Business

Ask a business owner about their reasons for starting a business, and the honest answer rarely begins with intention.

Someone was made redundant.

Someone couldn’t find work that fitted their life.

Someone needed income fast, and the business was the quickest route to it.

I lived a version of this myself… when work disappeared, and a family depended on me, the business had one job: survive.

In that frame of mind, getting the business to work becomes the main thing.

You sort the website. You order the business cards. You chase the first clients.

Every decision answers one question: will this bring money in soon?

That’s a completely rational response to pressure, and I’d never criticise anyone for it. I made the same moves.

The problem arrives later. The survival logic that got you started gradually becomes the operating system you never replace.

Years in, you’re still making decisions through the lens of someone who needed it to work as soon as possible… even though that moment passed long ago.

Very, very rarely does somebody sit down and look at the business as a vehicle that can improve their life.

The Business Goals Step Exists to Surface What’s Underneath the Noise

This is why the business goals step sits so early in the ASN System, before any strategy, before any technology.

Empathy first, then strategy, then tools. Always in that order.

The goals step asks you to write down twelve-month targets in two columns:

Professional targets (revenue, clients, team, capacity)

Personal targets (what the business must do for your actual life)

Both columns. In writing. On paper.

The writing part matters more than it looks. An unwritten picture steers nothing.

It stays vague, it shifts to fit whatever you did this week, and it never gets tested against reality.

Once it’s on paper, every decision has something to answer to.

Owners usually find the professional column easy.

Revenue targets come out quickly because that’s the language the business already speaks.

The personal column is where the room goes quiet.

The Personal Column Is the Engine

Here’s what I’ve come to believe after hundreds of these conversations: the personal powers the professional.

Revenue targets don’t get you out of bed on a cold, dark morning.

Nobody trudges through snow for a spreadsheet.

What gets someone up and moving is the trust fund they’re building for their kids.

The retirement they actually want rather than the one they’ll settle for.

The elderly parent they’re determined to care for properly.

The pet project… a school somewhere, a community programme, something that outlasts them.

That inner motivation is the load-bearing wall of the whole structure.

Everything else in the business rests on it, whether you’ve named it or not.

When you name it, something practical happens.

The business stops being an abstract machine for generating money and becomes a vehicle with a destination.

Decisions get easier because they now have a test: does this move me closer to the life in that column, or further from it?

When you don’t name it, the business defaults to its original programming.

Survival. More clients, more hours, more of you… and the life you wanted keeps getting postponed to a “later” that never arrives.

Better Reasons for Starting a Business Begin With One Question

If I could sit every founder down before they built anything, I’d give them one question to hold:

Key question: What value are you going to get from this business, and what value is the business going to give to the world?

Both halves. In the same breath. At the start.

The first half forces honesty about your own stake. You’re allowed to want things from this.

Time with your family. Financial security. Freedom to step back.

I’ve met owners who feel guilty admitting the business should serve them, as though wanting something personal from it taints the work.

It doesn’t. It fuels the work.

The second half keeps the whole thing pointed outward. It is your business purpose in plain words.

A business that only extracts value hollows out over time. Clients feel it, teams feel it, and eventually you feel it too.

The businesses I’ve seen endure are the ones where the owner can articulate what the world receives… better outcomes for clients, livelihoods for a team, something genuinely useful put into circulation.

Hold both halves together, and you get reciprocity.

The business feeds your life, and your life’s purpose feeds the business.

That loop is what sustains the ordinary, unglamorous effort that growth actually requires… because I won’t pretend any of this is quick.

It isn’t. The founders who last are the ones with a reason that survives the slow stretches.

What This Looks Like in Practice

You don’t need a retreat or a sabbatical to do this work.

You need an evening, a pen, and the willingness to answer truthfully.

My strong recommendation is this:

Run the thought experiment properly. Twenty thousand pounds a month, for life, guaranteed. Write down what you’d do with your time. Be specific.

Describe the business you’re currently building. The hours it demands, the role you play in it, where it’s heading on its current path.

Compare the two. Note every place where the business and the life point in different directions. That list is your real strategic agenda.

Write twelve-month targets in both columns. Professional and personal. Give the personal column equal weight… It’s the one that will carry you through winter.

Answer the reciprocity question in writing. What you’ll receive, and what the world will receive. Keep it visible. Test your next three big decisions against it.

Some of what comes out of this will be uncomfortable.

You may realise you’ve built a dependency rather than a vehicle… a business that grows on top of you rather than with you.

That discomfort is useful. It’s the inspection that reveals where the structure needs reinforcing, and it’s far cheaper to find now than in five years.

A plan that only answers to its own internal logic will always look fine on paper.

A plan that answers to your life gets honest very quickly.

Questions Founders Ask About Their Reasons for Starting a Business

What are the most common reasons for starting a business?

In my experience, the starting point is rarely intention.

Someone was made redundant, someone couldn’t find work that fitted their life, someone needed income fast.

Survival gets a business moving, and there’s nothing wrong with that. The mistake is letting it write every chapter that follows.

Do my reasons for starting a business have to be noble?

No. You’re allowed to want things from your business: time with your family, financial security, freedom to step back. Wanting something personal from it doesn’t taint the work. It fuels it.

What is the difference between professional and personal business goals?

Professional goals cover revenue, clients, team and capacity. Personal goals cover what the business must do for your actual life. The goals step asks for both, written down, as twelve-month targets, with the personal column given equal weight.

How do I check that my business still fits the reasons I started it?

Run the thought experiment. Write down what you’d do with your time if money were off the table, describe the business you’re building today, and compare the two. Every place where they point in different directions belongs on your strategic agenda.

Where This Leaves You

Most businesses begin in survival, and survival does its job… it gets you moving. The mistake is letting that origin story write every chapter that follows.

The goals step exists to interrupt that. Twelve-month targets, professional and personal, written down, with the personal column treated as the engine it actually is. The kids, the retirement, the people you care for, the project that matters to you… That’s what powers the professional effort when conditions turn cold.

And underneath it all sits one question worth sitting with before you build anything else: what value will you get from this business, and what value will it give to the world?

Answer that first, in writing, and everything you build afterwards has something solid to stand on.

The business becomes a vehicle for the life you described in the thought experiment… and the gap between the two starts to close.

To recap: survival starts most businesses, intention sustains them. Write both columns of your twelve-month goals, let the personal power the professional, and test every decision against the reciprocal value question. Do that, and you’ll be building something that grows with you… and keeps growing when you finally step back.

If you’d like help turning your own reasons for starting a business into a plan that serves your life, book a discovery call with me.

It’s 30 minutes, with no pitch deck and no pressure, and you’ll leave with a clearer view of where your business and your life are pulling apart, and what to do about it first.

The reasons for starting a business are rarely the reasons a business keeps going.
